My Horse, My Friend

by Kimball Lewis
Published by Gainsway Press

Always, in the past, when someone asked me how to get "into" horses, I instructed them to purchase many horse magazines and join a riding club. Now, I can simply tell them to buy Kimball Lewis' book, My Horse, My Friend. The cover message states that it is a practical guide to horses, and "practical" is the perfect word to describe the content of this book. Kimball Lewis shoots holes in the myth that horse owning is only for the rich, points out how a family can be transformed, and best of all, he uses actual occurrences as examples.

This book will walk you through how to buy a horse, where to keep a horse, how to care for (including feeding, supplements, exercise, and hoof care) a horse, and which breed might be best for you, the reader.

English and Western riding and tack are also covered, as is traveling with your horse, safety, brief descriptions of Equine athletic events and a few recommendations of good places to ride.

It is refreshing to see an author who has only to sit down at a desk and draw from his own vast experience, one how is able to put the advice into language straightforward enough for even the novice to understand. I would definitely keep this book on the coffee table after reading it so it would be handy for quick reference. And for those of you experienced riders out there who have lost your joy of riding and are suffering burnout, there is even a chapter in this book for you.

Shadow Horse

available at randomhouse.com/kids

A story about a teenager who gets into trouble and finds herself someplace she never expected to be, at an Equine sanctuary. Contains mystery, mild romance, horse slaughter education. For all ages.

Reviews:

Kevin Hall, age 32: I loved it! It was a great book, very entertaining. I can't wait to read the next one in this series!

Antoinette Smith, age 36: I read it in one day, I was so glued to it! I liked the fact that it's clean, has a good story line that doesn't drag, and educates the reader about horse slaughter. It's aimed at teenagers, but anyone who enjoys a good story will enjoy it, in my opinion.
