USESR; A Leader in the Fight to End Horse Slaughter

Meet our Rescues

Please keep in mind adopters need to live in an area of Texas or bordering states where volunteers are available to do the initial site inspection and follow-up visits.
We currently have no site inspectors in far east Texas or areas near Mexico. According to our adoption policies, adoptions are final in two years.
The horses cannot ever be sold, but can be given away to someone who meets our adoption criteria. Otherwise, horses must be donated back to the rescue in the event they can no longer be cared for. We do have an exchange policy in case the adoption doesn't work out.

Wizard

Wizard- not yet available for foster or adoption. White Shetland pony gelding. Found in a pasture with a dog chain doubled around his neck so tightly that when enticed with a treat in order to be caught, he had to stick his tiny little nose way up in the air, so he could have room to swallow. His feet were badly foundered in the front. In the back, his toes had grown into long points, making movement in the rear just as difficult as movement in the front. Wizard was placed on a special diet to help his hooves and is under veterinary care right now. The charge for his first hoof trim, as administered by a veterinarian after thorough X-rays, is $250.00. In addition to a coggins, vaccinations, multiple wormings, we've ordered special treatment to help us care for Wizard's hooves. This little man really needs a monthly sponsor. Your $10.00 a month will help us meet Wizard's medical needs. Wizard is currently in Intake Foster Care in Bridgeport, Texas. Contact Headquarters to see how he's doing. We expect to release him for adoption by the fall of 2006.

Comic Invitation

Appaloosa gelding, registered & enrolled in the Appaloosa Breeders Trust through 2009. Foaled 3/16/04. We believe his grandsire was Reserve World Champion. Bred at Top Step Farm for a winning show career, a freak injury put an abrupt halt to any future in the show ring. Comic appeared with a hole in the side of his head, above his jaw and right below his ear. The injury was so severe, it knocked his jaw out of alignment by about two inches. Consequently, Comic can not take a bit in his mouth. He also cannot fully close his lips. Comic is otherwise sound and healthy. He was at the point in his training when they were about to start riding him. He has been saddled and longed, but no one has ever gotten on his back. He is very well trained, as one would expect any proper show horse to be. He stands tied patiently, is easy to catch/halter, gives up all 4 feet, trailers easily, and has an excellent disposition. What stands out most about his is his sensibility. He is very sensible, not jumpy or spooky at all. He'll be coming from a very structured environment into a more relaxed lifestyle. He'll be encountering many new sights, sounds, and smells with you. His sensible manner will see you both through these experiences. Comic is suitable for any sport that allows him to carry a hackamore or bosal, rather than a bit. Currently in Intake Foster Care looking for someone who won't let him forget the ground lessons he's learned and who will be able to start him under saddle in the spring. He is also available for adoption. His fee is $400.00.

Blaze

Rescued from auction, this sorrel colt with a flaxen mane and tail is bound to grow tall & strong. All he needs is your tender loving care and some feed! Recently rescued, Blaze is still very thin. He and his herdmate, whom we also rescued from auction, were part of a herd that had been allowed to roam and breed indescrimately. Every year or two, some of these unhandled horses are culled from the herd and run through the local auction ring. With their complete lack of training, registration papers, and being starved half to death on top of everything else- these wild, but healthy, horses were candidates for the killer-buyer and almost no one else! Blaze is what is called a "long yearling", meaning that he is close to two years old. He was sold at auction as a Quarter Horse. Click on Blaze's name to see some pictures of him. Some are just silouettes, so that you can see his confirmation (hopefully). Although he was unhandled, USESR volunteers had him in a halter and starting to lead after just two days with him. Blaze was sold as already gelded, and his herdmate, Comanche, was sold as a stallion. We cannot get close enough to Blaze to see if he really is gelded or not. If you are interested in fostering or adopting Blaze, just contact us and ask if he has been gelded or not. He has not had any vaccinations. We do not administer vaccines to wild horses, as it is dangerous for our volunteers and the trauma may set the horse back in its progression toward trust in a human being. Blaze does have a negative coggins test, which came with him from the auction. Blaze is sound and healthy. Blaze arrived at Intake Foster Care on Sept. 30. We are currently seeking a foster home for him, where he can be handled through the winter, and placed on a feeding program so that he can gain all the weight he needs to continue growing up healthy and happy. It is standard in our Adoption Contracts that we require unbroke horses to be broke to ride and be being ridden before the adoption can be finalized. If the adoption is not finalized in 3 years, we repossess the horse. On the other hand, Blaze is too small to be ridden right now. He may grow quite a bit over the winter, with proper feeding. We will expect Blaze's adopter to do ground work only with Blaze until at least March of 2007. Blaze's adoption fee is only $100.00. He has only been pastured all his life. He is currently in Intake, looking for a foster home. For information on Blaze, contact Headquarters.

Comanche

Rescued with Blaze (see Blaze's bio, above) at auction, this shy little guy has all the curiosity of a regular horse. He needs your love to break through his fear so that he can explore the world he finds so facinating! He gets scared easily, so you'll have to take it slow with him, but once you get started, stand back! Curious Comanche will be set free! He seems to have a very quick mind and may be best suited to athletics in the future. Right now, he needs to learn to trust people and he needs to be on a good diet, as he is very underweight. Blaze is solid sorrel with a thin strip of white on his face. He has been gelded (we are sure, because we had it done) but has not had any vaccinations. Please bear in mind that Comanche has always been pastured all his life. He is currently in Intake Foster Care, looking for a foster or adoptive home. His adoption fee is a steal at $100.00.

*Please Note:  We have put $500.00 into Comanche already, and he has only been with us for a couple of weeks. No one would pay $500.00 to adopt a horse like Comanche, therefore, we lose money on horses like Comanche. Your donations help make up the difference. Please use PayPal today and donate to the United States Equine Sanctuary & Rescue.

Cinnabon

Cinnabon is a sorrel pony mare, standing 12 hands high, with a star and snip, no other markings. She's been foundered and her hooves were terribly neglected when Wise County Animal Control called us and asked if we could take in 3 horses that a local resident, down on luck, wanted to surrender. She has been foundered and although she was trimmed, she still has some difficulty walking. She is otherwise sound and healthy. She's already gained so much weight, we've had to cut back on her feed! She is really thriving now and will be released for adoption soon. Cinny is currently being located in Bridgeport, Texas. To find out more about Cinny, contact Headquarters.

Caddillac  "adoption pending"

Caddillac is a 14 year old sorrel mare, standing 14.3 hands high. She is still in intake and being evaluated. If what we were told about her is accurate, she knows what to do when you put her in front of a cow. She can stop on a dime, spin around and give you five cents change back. She is said to ride with a hackamore and it's said that she does not buck or have any bad habits, except that she doesn't like to give her feet up. We do know that much about her. And, we know she knows how to longe and stands well for saddling. We have already set an adoption fee for Caddillac- $550.00. She is available for adoption now, even though she has not been fully evaluated. She's at a special home where she will be ridden until the middle of July. After that, she'll need a foster home to go to. To inquire about fostering or adopting Caddillac, contact Dusk Caddillac bears two brands on her right side. One on her hip says, "WAP", and one on her shoulder is the number 49. If you have any information about these brands or can identify this mare, please contact USESR.

Dolly

This sweet little sorrel Mustang mare is sturdy, sound and healthy! Dolly was saved from the killers at auction. A nice, smoothe riding horse, Dolly stands to be saddled and takes a bit like candy. She'll go over any obstacle and stand tied overnight by your campsite. She's not interested in speed events at her age (16 years). Suitable for any level of rider, Dolly is a former trail horse in a guided trail ride business. Many a city slicker mile has been logged in Dolly's saddle. All of this makes Dolly an ideal horse for the rider advanced in age who is interested in a comfortable, relaxing ride down the trail, with a little slow trotting mixed in if both horse and rider agree to it. Dolly came to be a rescue horse because she has no papers and she has a problem with spooking on the ground if someone walks up to her too fast. One time, she dragged a small stock trailer several feet. A group of excited children would probably be too much for Dolly, at least for the first several months, if they are they kind who are very verbal, because of the high-pitched voices that young children have. But Dolly has been around quiet children and she is okay with them. She just doesn't like to be what she considers 'snuck up on'. Dolly leads, loads, stands tied, is healthy, sound and gentle broke to ride. She is hard to catch without feed. It will take you a long time to be able to just walk up to her and catch her, but she is not agressive at all. She has the calm disposition of a horse her age. Dolly's adoption fee is $450.00. Dolly is located near Weatherford, Texas. To meet Dolly or inquire about how wonderful she is, contact Steve.

Keera

Keera is an 11 year old sorrel half-Arabian mare who shattered her leg between her fetlock and hoof. She cannot be ridden by an adult, and can only be ridden by a rider under 50 lbs. for short periods of time. She also has mild arthritis. Keera leads, loads, gives up all 4 feet, and does stand tied, but not for too long, because standing in one place starts to hurt her leg after a while. In the summer time, Keera's skin tends to get dry, flake and itch, so she'll need some special care during the summers, such as a regular misting of something that will hydrate her skin. She also needs to be on a joint lubricating supplement for her arthritis. Keera is looking for a foster and/or adoptive home. Her adoption fee is just $75.00. She is located in Forestburg, TX.
contact Headquarters to meet Keera.

Cobalt

Cobalt is a jet black Thoroughbred gelding, approximately 25 years old. Cobalt is said to have, "come off the track", but at such an advanced age, that must have been many moons ago.
