Assistant to the Secretary, Grant Writer

Assistant to the Secretary

Being the Secretary of a large, ever-expanding state-wide equine rescue organization is a big responsibility, especially when one is a volunteer and not a salary. As with any organization of any significant size, paperwork is always the glue that both holds everything together and slows everything down, all at the same time!

There is no way any one person can fulfill all the duties of a paid secretary. The Secretary is responsible for printing and distributing our Official Book of Rules and Regulations, which each paid member receives shortly after joining USESR. The Secretary sends out Thank You cards to donors, as well as end-of-the-year donation receipts. The Secretary sends out Membership Packets, Adoption Application Packets, Volunteer Orientation Packets, Membership Cards, and Chairs various committees. He/she answers mail from the website directed to him or her, as well as attending each and every USESR meeting and keeping the minutes of the meetings.

While these duties may not sound like much, just getting the R&R Books out is a huge undertaking, and when everything else is added, it becomes quite a time-consuming effort, especially for a volunteer with family, job, and other interests mixed in. The Secretary requires a staff of his or her own in order to perform the duties associated with the office of Secretary.

Volunteers for this position must have a home computer. Any programs required can be furnished by USESR. A color ink jet printer is also a plus, but not required for all Assistant positions.

Grant Writer

The Grant Writer must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral. He or she must be willing to learn how to write grants as well as keep a list of all Grantors. The Grant Writer volunteers closely with the Research Specialist and all other volunteers whose specialties coincide with information needed to successfully write grant proposals. Training is paid for by USESR. Home computer and color ink jet printer is required for this position.
